The Department of Public Health, State University of Bangladesh organized a workshop on “Gender Equality, Mental Health and Well-being for Youth” on 1st April, 2018 in collaboration with Shishu Aangina – Child and Women Development Center. Prof. Dr. Nawzia Yasmin, Head, Department of Public Health, SUB inaugurated the seminar and offered the welcome speech. Dr. Amatul Uzma, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist & Senior Clinical Lecturer of Psychiatry, The University of Western Australia and Mahmuda Rahman Khan, Gender Specialist, General Secretary, Shishu Aangina were the facilitators of the workshop. Prof. Dr. Md. Sayeed Salam, Vice Chancellor, Maj. Gen.(Retd.) Dr. M Shahjahan, Treasurer and Advisor, School of Health Sciences and Khan Ferdousour Rahman, Associate Professor & Head, Dept. of Environmental Science were attended in the seminar. In the key note paper Dr. Uzma briefly described about mental health, mental well being, the biggest challenge of the 21st century, lifetime prevalence of common mental disorder, gender matters in mental health, challenges in mental health and common mental health problems in youth. In her presentation Mahmuda Rahman briefly discussed about basic concepts of gender, difference between sex and gender, gender division of labor, gender roles, gender equality, gender equity, women’s empowerment and tools for gender analysis – women’s empowerment framework. All the faculty members and students of Department of Public Health and other disciplines were present in the seminar. The seminar was supported by Manusher Jonno Foundation.
