Seminar on "Artificial Intelligence in Surveillance: Musing on the future" held in SUB

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organized a seminar on "Artificial Intelligence in Surveillance: Musing on the future" in the SUB Main Campus at 77 Satmasjid Road, Dhanmondi on April 03, 2011.
Mamoon Al Rasheed, Sr. Lecturer & Program Head of CSE highlighted on Artificial intelligence (AI) that attempts to provide machines with human-like thinking and is increasingly being used in combination with physical surveillance. The system recognizes aberrant or suspicious behavior or even facial recognition capabilities that are extremely useful in fighting terrorism/ crimes and capturing known terrorists and criminals.
The chief guest Prof. Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of State University of Bangladesh alarmed that artificial intelligence is a very useful tool in the fight against terrorism and crime, there is still no substitute yet for human beings. As they (AI) are not able to take the information that they have and extrapolate from that to predict events of a type that are not already programmed into their pattern-recognition algorithm, nor can they use information that they are programmed to recognize as a threat and then make a judgment, as humans can do.
At the end in this brief speech, Dr. Mohammad Lutfur Rahman Assistant Professor & Head of the Department of SUB urged students to pay attention to real life events in order to find links to education they receive. Prof. A Y M Ekram-ud-Daulah, Registrar (SUB) was also present on the occasion.
The seminar ended with a Film Show: "Eagle Eye" that depicted an out-of-control AI expert system and subsequent events to stop it.
