Celebration of the “5th Anniversary” of the Department of Public Health, State University of Bangladesh (SUB).

On the occasion of the celebration of the “5th Anniversary” of the Department of Public Health, State University of Bangladesh (SUB), a Seminar on “Role of Public Health Education in Achieving MDG in Bangladesh” was organized on the 7th June, 2008, Saturday, at 5:00 P.M. in the SUB Auditorium.

Mr. A.K.M. Zafar Ullah Khan, Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present among us as the Chief Guest and Prof. Dr. Hosne Ara Tahmin, Additional Director General, Administration, Directorate of Health Services, as Special Guest. The Seminar was presided over by Prof. M S Ilyas Dhami, Acting Vice Chancellor, SUB.

After the welcome address, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. M Shahjahan, Advisor, School of Health Sciences, SUB, presented the keynote paper. In his Paper, Dr Shahjahan said that good public health education is critical to achieving MDGs in Bangladesh by 2015. The scopes of public health professionals, researchers, managers, academicians and policy makers in advocacy of public health and health policy at the national and international levels were also elaborately discussed.

In her speech, the Special Guest Prof. Dr. Hosne Ara Tahmin, Additional Director General, Administration, Directorate of Health Services, said that in order to achieve the MDGs, the NGOs, academicians, researchers and public sectors should work together.

In his speech, the Chief Guest, Mr. A.K.M. Zafar Ullah Khan, Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, People’s Republic of Bangladesh congratulated the Department of Public Health, SUB for being a pioneer in public health education and organizing the Seminar.

He said that so far pro-rich approach has been taken to achieve MDGs and the indicators require reviewing. Approaches as workforce management, women’s empowerment, combating tropical diseases, honest and mixed approaches of health service delivery are essential to achieve social reforms.

In the concluding remarks, the Honorable Chairperson Prof. M S Ilyas Dhami, Acting Vice Chancellor, SUB, said that public health education and research should be nationally oriented and need based.

The Seminar was conducted by Dr Suman Lahiry, Assistant Professor, and Department of Public Health, SUB. In the welcome address, Dr Nawzia Yasmin, Head & Academic Program Director, Department of Public health, SUB said that SUB is the first private university in Bangladesh to start MPH Program in May, 2003 and are running 16th batch with more than 200 students including international students from Nepal and Uganda.

Then the certificates were awarded to the participants of Research Methodology Workshop held from 11th May to 3rd June, 2008. by the Chief Guest. As a memento of the noble occasion in the history of Department of Public Health, SUB, the SUB Crests were presented to the guests by the Honorable Chairperson Prof MS Ilyas Dhami. Prof. A Y M Ekram-ud-Daulah, Registrar, SUB gave the vote of thanks. Dinner was served to all guests.
