State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organized a Seminar on “Role of Public Health Education in achieving MDGs in Developing Countries" at Kathmandu, Nepal.

State University of Bangladesh (SUB), a leading private University of Bangladesh organized a Seminar entitled “Role of Public Health Education in Achieving MDGs in Developing Countries” on Friday 24 October 2008 at 5:00PM in the conference Hall of Royal Singi Hotel at Kathmandu, Nepal.

Prof. Madhab Prasad Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Tribhuvan University, Kritipur, Kathmandu, Nepal, was present as the Chief Guest, Md. Emdadul Haque,First Secretary-Consular for  Education, Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Prof. Soorya Lal Amatya, Rector, Tribhuvan University were present as Special Guest and the Guest of Honor respectively. The Seminar was presided over by Prof. M S Ilyas Dhami, Acting Vice Chancellor of State University of Bangladesh (SUB).

In the welcome address, Dr Nawzia Yasmin, Head and  Academic Program Director, Department of Public health, SUB said that SUB is the first private university in Bangladesh to start MPH Program in May 2003 and other allied health sciences programs in Bangladesh.  She also mentioned that SUB has graduated many international students from her department including students from Nepal. She made the presentation that was of great interest to all.
 
The welcome address was followed by the presentation of the Key paper by SUB Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. M Shahjahan, Advisor, School of Health Sciences. He elaborated and discussed the issues of public health education in the region. He emphasized  on the various activities and step in achieving the MDGs in Developing Countries by 2015. The role and importance of public health professionals, researchers, managers, academicians and need-based health policy at the national and international level were explored in the presentation. He reviewed the needs of health issues in the region. His presentation aroused the interest for community based health education and awareness among the audience. 

The Guest of Honor Prof. Soorya Lal Amatya, Rector, Tribhuvan University emphasized on reducing the poverty, maternal mortality, increasing child nutrition and eliminating gender disparity in primary & secondary education of the developing countries and the need of skilled health care professionals.
 
The Special Guest, Md. Emdadul Haque, First Secretary-Consular for Education, Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh argued to achieve the MDGs and suggested the NGOs, academicians, researchers and public sectors to work together for the betterment of the community.   

In his speech, the Chief Guest, Prof. Madhab Prasad Sharma, Vice-Channcellor, Tribhuvan University congratulated SUB for organizing such a fruitful seminar. He emphasized that skilled human resource is essential for the socio-development of a nation. He said that so far pro-rich health policy has been taken to achieve MDGs that requires a critical review. Approaches as workforce management, women’s empowerment, combating tropical diseases, honest and mixed approaches of health service delivery are essential to achieve social reforms.
 
Prof. Dr. Shiva Kumar Rai, Chairman, Nepal Health Professional Council spoke about importance of Public Health education in Nepal.

In the concluding remarks and vote of thanks, the Honorable Chairperson Prof. M S Ilyas Dhami, Acting Vice Chancellor, SUB, said that public health education and research should be community oriented and practically need based. He advised the Alumni of MPH in Nepal to work with commitment and dedication for betterment of the nation and citizens. He thanked all the invited dignitaries from National and International organizations in Nepal.

To mark this noble occasion of SUB, the Honorable Chairperson Prof MS Ilyas Dhami presented the University Crests to the respectable guests. The seminar was followed by Dinner.
