The Department of Public Health, State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organized a seminar entitled "Linkages among MDGs: Poverty, Health and Gender: Learning from Development Interventions" . Ms. Rokeya Sultana, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was the Chief Guest. The Seminar was presided by Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. M Shahjahan, Advisor, School of Health Sciences, SUB. Dr Suman Lahiry, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health, SUB, conducted the Seminar. After the welcome speech by
Dr. Nawzia Yasmin, Head & Academic Program Director, Department of Public health, SUB, Ms Mahmuda Rahman Khan, USAID, provided an overview of the Seminar topic emphasizing on that gender as a cross-cutting issue for all the MDGs.
Md. Monirul Alam of UNICEF highlighted WASH and public health concerns, poverty and WatSan related diseases. Dr. Abu Jamil Faisel, Country representative of Engender health highlighted prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula as a key area for achieving MDG .
The chief guest in her speech mentioned gender as cross-cutting concern and government’s gender-centric endeavors. She emphasized that the public health academics and researchers embracing the urge for introspection can empower the hindrance created by gender discriminations. Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. M Shahjahan, Advisor, School of Health Sciences, SUB, in his concluding remarks stressed the need for research to evaluate role of management in achieving gender equity & thanked everybody for their participation. Students as well as dignitaries, invited guests from national and international organizations, faculty members and member of the staff of SUB were present in the Seminar.
