Faculty Development Day-2009 was observed in presence of all advisers, heads and faculty members on October 05, 2009 at the SUB auditorium under the auspices of State University of Bangladesh. Registrar of State University of Bangladesh, Prof. A Y M Ekram-ud-Daulah took the chair at the program.

The event provided the faculty with scope to get familiar with the up-to-date teaching methodology. The program comprised the two sessions in which Vice Chancellor of State University of Bangladesh, Prof. Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury, and former Director of IER, Dhaka University, Prof. Iqbal Muttaqi delivered the keynote speeches.

Professor Ghani, in his speech, said, "The personal attributes of a good teacher are confidence, sincerity, thoroughness and friendliness. Someone seeking to carry out teaching activity properly should follow the confidence-building-techniques that involve working diligently to prepare lessons, speaking everything in a strong clear language in presence of the learners and wearing garments in harmony with the demand of situation."

Professor Ghani, referring to ancient and medieval education, emphasized the importance of writing. He said, "About 3000 BC, with the advent of writing, education became more conscious or self-reflective, with specialized occupations requiring particular skills and knowledge on how to be a scribe, an astronomer, etc. Philosophy in ancient Greece led to questions of educational method entering national discourse. In his Republic, Plato describes a system of instruction that he felt would lead an ideal state. In his dialogues, Plato describes the Socratic method."It has been, as he claimed, the intent of many educators since then, such as the Roman educator Quintilian, to find specific, interesting ways to encourage students to use their intelligence and to help them to learn.

He bestowed his concentration on medieval education and said, "Comenius, in Bohemia, wanted all boys and girls to learn. In his The World in Pictures, he gave the first, illustrated textbook which contained much that children would be familiar with in everyday life, and use it to teach the academic subjects they needed to know.Rabelais described how the student Gargantua learned the world and what is in it."

Former Director of IER, Dhaka University, Prof. Iqbal Muttaqi focused light on diversity in teaching in the classroom. He said, "Diversity in teaching in the classroom involves questioning, explaining, demonstrating, collaborating and learning by teaching."

Registrar of State University of Bangladesh, Prof. A Y M Ekram-ud-Daulah, in his concluding speech, conveyed thanks to all. The presentation led to a sumptuous dinner.
